{"id":299,"date":"2011-10-25T11:02:09","date_gmt":"2011-10-25T16:02:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ryanbelanger.com\/?p=299"},"modified":"2011-10-25T11:02:09","modified_gmt":"2011-10-25T16:02:09","slug":"sharepoint-2010-fix-changing-computer-name","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ryanbelanger.com\/?p=299","title":{"rendered":"SharePoint 2010 &#8211; fix changing computer name"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you have a SharePoint installation and for some reason you changed the name of the machine on which the SQLServer instance is running, SharePoint won&#8217;t be able to connect to the database server anymore. The reason is because SharePoint stores the computer name (netbios name) in many places in its configuration database.\u00a0 In order to fix this issue, you must reconfigure SharePoint to let it know the new SQL Server location.<\/p>\n<p>On my developer machine (Windows 7), I installed SharePoint as suggested by Microsoft for developer computers so this creates a separate instance for SharePoint on the local SQL Server.\u00a0 It is not required to enter the instance name when you configure the server, only the computer name will be enough.<\/p>\n<p>The following steps are based on Pinal Dave&#8217;s procedure he <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.sqlauthority.com\/2008\/09\/09\/sql-server-error-fix-sharepoint-stop-working-after-changing-server-computer-name\/\">posted on his blog<\/a>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sqlauthority.com\">http:\/\/www.sqlauthority.com<\/a>. Great blog by the way, go take a look!<\/p>\n<p>1- Start SharePoint 2010 Management Shell (Run as administrator)<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-305\" title=\"SharePoint-Management-Shell\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ryanbelanger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/SharePoint-Management-Shell.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"135\" \/><\/p>\n<p>2- Run the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>stsadm -o setconfigdb -databaseserver myComputer -farmuser myDomain\\myUser -farmpassword myPassword<\/pre>\n<p><strong>NOTE: This might take several minutes to complete.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-304\" title=\"SharePoint-2010-Shell\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ryanbelanger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/SharePoint-2010-Shell.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"677\" height=\"342\" \/><\/p>\n<p>3- Go into Internet Information Services Manager<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-300\" title=\"IIS-Management\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ryanbelanger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IIS-Management.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"409\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p>4-\u00a0Remove the SharePoint Central Administration v4 site. It will be re-created automatically later.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryanbelanger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/RemoveSharePoint-Central-Administration.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-301\" title=\"RemoveSharePoint-Central-Administration\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ryanbelanger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/RemoveSharePoint-Central-Administration.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"397\" height=\"352\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>5- Run the SharePoint 2010 Products Configuration Wizard<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-302\" title=\"SharePoint-2010-Configuration-wizard\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ryanbelanger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/SharePoint-2010-Configuration-wizard.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"235\" height=\"78\" \/><\/p>\n<p>6- Click Next &gt; on the Welcome Screen.\u00a0 <strong>NOTE: You might need to run the SharePoint Configuration Wizard twice if the removed administration site is not created the first time<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-303\" title=\"SharePoint-2010-Config-Wizard-Run\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ryanbelanger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/SharePoint-2010-Config-Wizard-Run.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"631\" height=\"543\" \/><\/p>\n<p>7- You&#8217;re done, you should now be able to connect to your SharePoint Central Administration website.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"SharePoint-2010-Central-Administration\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ryanbelanger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/SharePoint-2010-Central-Administration.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"439\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next time you configure your SharePoint server, do it with <a href=\"http:\/\/ddkonline.blogspot.com\/2010\/05\/sharepoint-best-practice-using-sql.html\"><strong>database aliases<\/strong> <\/a>instead of server names.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you have a SharePoint installation and for some reason you changed the name of the machine on which the SQLServer instance is running, SharePoint won&#8217;t be able to connect to the database server anymore.
