{"id":232,"date":"2011-10-05T10:07:10","date_gmt":"2011-10-05T15:07:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ryanbelanger.com\/?p=232"},"modified":"2011-10-05T10:07:10","modified_gmt":"2011-10-05T15:07:10","slug":"vmware-esxi-copy-paste","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ryanbelanger.com\/?p=232","title":{"rendered":"Enable Copy Paste in vSphere client for VMware ESXi 4.1 and later"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ever tried to copy-paste from your computer to a VMWare virtual machine through the vSphere Client?\u00a0 Not working?\u00a0 Well, that&#8217;s normal according to VMWare.\u00a0 Starting with vSphere 4.1, copy-paste is disabled by default.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/kb.vmware.com\/selfservice\/microsites\/search.do?language=en_US&amp;cmd=displayKC&amp;externalId=1026437\">See here for reference\u00a0on VMWare website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u00a0is an easy way to enable it for all VMs at once.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Log into the service console.\u00a0\u00a0If you are not familiar on how to\u00a0do that, <a title=\"Access VMWare ESXi v4.1 and later SSH service console\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ryanbelanger.com\/?p=234\">click here<\/a> to see my\u00a0quick post on the subject.<\/li>\n<li>Edit file \/etc\/vmware\/config\n<pre>vi \/etc\/vmware\/config<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Add the following two lines to the end of the file\n<pre>isolation.tools.copy.disable=\"FALSE\"\nisolation.tools.paste.disable=\"FALSE\"<\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryanbelanger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/vSphereEnableCopyPaste.gif\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-248\" title=\"vSphereEnableCopyPaste\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ryanbelanger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/vSphereEnableCopyPaste.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"651\" height=\"412\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIf you&#8217;re not familiar with vi text editor, this step\u00a0can be a bit tricky so here are detailed steps.<\/li>\n<ol>\n<li>Once in vi editor, before doing anything, <strong>press the &#8220;i&#8221; key<\/strong>, this will enable insert mode.<\/li>\n<li>Scroll to the end of the file and to the end of the line and press <strong>Enter<\/strong> to add a blank line.<\/li>\n<li>Copy the text and paste it using your <strong>right mouse button<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Press <strong>ESCAPE<\/strong> key to go out of insert mode<\/li>\n<li>Type <strong>&#8220;:wq&#8221;<\/strong> command to write the file and quit<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<li>You&#8217;re done. Config will be enabled on the next reboot\u00a0of each VM.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: These options do not persist after an upgrade.
